Fall is upon us, which means crisp weather, warm beverages, pumpkin-scented-and-flavored everything, and men in varying patterns of flannel. But maybe best of all, it means fall leaves.

Painted in shades of yellow, orange, and crimson, autumn leaves are a delight for our eyes—largely because their beauty is fleeting. In a matter of weeks, they will be gone forever (or until their green cousins replace them in the spring).

Fortunately, there are lots of ways you can bring some of this fall beauty into your home, and in some cases preserve it forever. We’ve collected seven DIY projects for decorating with leaves. You may never want to leaf your house!

Cozy Candle Holders

Don’t limit the sweater-wearing to the humans in your household—spread the love and wrap a few candles up too. These creative candle decorations are made from the cuff of an old sweater and then adorned with an oak leaf. Learn more at Family Chic.

Fall Leaf Placemats

This one, from The Style Safari, is so easy that even you—yes, you—can do it. You’ll need leaves (fake or real), Mod Podge, a sponge brush, plastic wrap, and about 15 minutes of time for each placemat (however, the leaves need to be dried overnight). Finish the meal by turning the placemats into leafy frisbees.

Leaf and Branch Mobile

Liven up your entryway or another lonely wall with this fun project from Happiness is Homemade. You’ll need paper, watercolor paint, string, and a stick. We imagine you could use real leaves too—making it au so natural.

Leafy Mantel Banner

We love this simple, festive elegance from Sondra Lyn at Home. She used paper leaves, twine, book pages, and antique clothespins, cutting the book pages into a leafy shape and then placing them on every other leaf.

You can also play a fun game by telling guests there is a hidden message in the book excerpts and watch them struggle to figure it out.

Fall Leaf Place Cards

Perfect for fall weddings or just a fall dinner party, these leaf cards will make sitting next to crazy uncle Jim just a little more bearable. You just need some dried leaves, a pretty pen (metallic gold or silver?), and a person with beautiful handwriting.

Hanging Wax-Dipped Leaves

This project is not only fun but it enables you to preserve the appearance of leaves, extending their beauty way past fall. Now if only we could freeze our own aging process…

For this one, from queen of craftiness Martha Stewart, you’ll need colorful leaves, bleached beeswax, a double boiler, monofilament, and clothespins. They look especially great hanging from a window!

Mason Jar Candle Holders

Illuminate your home with these pretty—and surprisingly easy—mason jar candle holders from Spark and Chemistry. All it takes is mason jars (or whatever jars you’d like), real or fake leaves, Mod Podge, a sponge brush (or something similar), and a candle, and your house is instantly festive. Make sure not to leave the candles unattended—fires are NOT festive.
Well, this is where we leaf you. Happy decorating and let us know how your projects go!
